Homeownership & Maintenance Guide: Preparing Your Home for Calgary’s Spring Melt
Early March in Calgary means the snow’s starting to thaw, but that melt can bring hidden headaches like basement flooding or foundation cracks. For new homeowners, especially immigrants building stability here, knowing how to prep now saves stress and cash later.
Check your eavestroughs and downspouts now. Clear any ice dams or debris so water flows away from your foundation, not pooling near walls. Aim for extensions at least 1.5 metres from the house, according to the City of Calgary.
Inspect grading around your home. Ensure soil slopes away from the foundation at a 2% grade, about 5 cm drop over 2.5 metres. Add topsoil if needed before full melt hits, as recommended by the CMHC Home Maintenance Guide.
Test your sump pump. Plug it in, pour water into the sump pit, and confirm it activates and drains properly. Replace the battery backup if it’s over 3 years old. Power outages during melt are common, and the Government of Alberta Flood Preparedness resources stress this step.
Look for cracks in foundation or walls. Early March freeze-thaw cycles widen them. Seal small ones, under 3 mm, with concrete caulk, but call a pro for bigger issues. The City of Calgary Basement Flooding Prevention guide walks you through what to watch for.
Trim overhanging branches. Heavy snowmelt plus wind can drop them on roofs or lines. Get it done before green-up, ENMAX Safety Tips recommend.
These steps take a weekend but prevent thousands in water damage, which hits Calgary hard every spring. As a guy who started with basement suites in Bridlewood, I know a dry home means peace of mind. Do this yearly, and you’re ahead of 90% of folks.
