Calgary’s overnight temperatures can change quickly this time of year. A few simple checks now can help protect your furnace, pipes, basement, and wallet before winter settles in.
Turn on your furnace today and confirm that warm air is coming through the vents. Testing it early gives you more time to arrange service before the busy winter season. Check the filter monthly and replace it when it is dirty. As a general rule, Calgary recommends changing the filter with the seasons, although homes with pets or higher dust levels may need more frequent changes.
Keep boxes, storage items, and other materials clear of the furnace and hot water tank. You want good airflow and safe access around your mechanical equipment.
Check Your Vents and Outdoor Water
Check furnace exhaust vents, intake vents, dryer vents, and other exterior openings. Keep them clear of leaves, snow, and ice so appliances can operate and exhaust properly. If your furnace stops working during cold weather, inspect the outside termination for ice buildup. Persistent problems should be handled by a qualified service technician.
Disconnect garden hoses, shut off the outdoor water supply, and drain remaining water from hose bibs and low points. If you have an irrigation system, winterize it by draining or blowing out the lines, shutting off the controller, and protecting the backflow device as required. Exposed outdoor pipes and hose bibs can also be insulated to reduce the risk of freezing and bursting.
Gutters, Drainage, and Attic Checks
Remove leaves and debris from eavestroughs before snow and ice accumulate. Confirm that downspouts direct water away from the foundation and that the ground slopes away from the home. Poor drainage can allow water to collect near the foundation, increasing the chance of basement moisture problems when snow melts.
Look for drafts around windows and exterior doors. Replace damaged weatherstripping or caulking where needed. In the attic, watch for moisture, frost, or staining on the underside of the roof. These may point to ventilation or insulation concerns that should be assessed before winter conditions become more severe.
Travel Plans and Safety Equipment
If you travel during winter, keep the heat operating and consider a smart thermostat or temperature alert. These tools can notify you about unusually low indoor temperatures or possible freezing-pipe conditions.
Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms, check that vents are unobstructed, and keep access to your mechanical equipment clear. If your home has a fireplace or chimney, arrange inspection or cleaning when needed.
Winter preparation is not about doing everything in one weekend. Start with the high-priority items: furnace, outdoor water, vents, gutters, and safety alarms. For new homeowners, save this checklist in your phone and repeat it every fall. Small maintenance habits can help prevent larger repairs later, especially in Calgary’s freeze-and-thaw climate.
Kailangan lang nating maging proactive. Konting effort ngayon, mas malaking peace of mind mamaya. Your home will thank you, and so will your wallet.
